I visited this kindergarten in a remote village in Ukraine back in 2017. Many of the children came from deeply challenged households - it was extraordinary to see how all the kindergarten carers went out of their way to fill in the gaps and provide a nurturing and loving home-like environment for every child.
To me as a photographer these images are also about really being with children, in their world, being allowed in… and simply honouring someone through the camera.
I’m grateful to photography for letting me revisit these moments of connection, for the reminder that they did happen and that I had the children’s trust. What a privilege.
